About Reverse DNS Lookup
A reverse DNS (rDNS) lookup does the opposite of a normal DNS query: instead of turning a hostname into an IP address, it turns an IP address back into a hostname by reading its PTR record. This reveals the name a network operator has assigned to that address.
Reverse DNS is widely used to verify mail servers, diagnose network issues, and add context to log files. A properly configured PTR record is often required for a mail server to be trusted and to avoid being marked as spam.
How it works
- 1Enter an IPv4 or IPv6 address.
- 2We build the reverse (.in-addr.arpa or .ip6.arpa) query and resolve it over DNS-over-HTTPS.
- 3The PTR hostname, if one exists, is returned.
